Common Breastfeeding Questions and Answers
Q.
How Many Times a Day Do I Feed My Baby?
A.
The simple answer is to feed your baby as much as they want. Typically a newborn will need feeding every 1-2 hours. This amount of time will lengthen as your baby grows.
Q.
How Do I Know if My Baby Is Getting Enough Milk?
A.
Unless your baby is showing signs of hunger, it is likely getting enough milk, as your body should adapt to your child’s needs. However, this is not always the case, and pumping a feed is a great way to see just how much milk you are producing.
Q.
Is Breastfeeding Painful?
A.
For most women, breastfeeding is initially painful. This can vary depending on whether you have a good latch and how sensitive your nipples are. Usually, pain subsides within a few weeks of breastfeeding. We have several tips on how to cope during this time in our guide.
Q.
Do I Need a Breast Pump?
A.
If you are away from your baby when they need a feed and you are not offering formula then you will need a breast pump. Breast pumps can also be used to increase supply, drain excess milk or replace a feed.
Q.
Is It Possible to Feed My Baby Both Breastmilk and Formula?
A.
Yes of course, but offer separately either one after the other or for separate feedings. Never mix formula and breastmilk together as combining them could lose nutritional properties.
Q.
What if I Choose Not to Breastfeed?
A.
Breastfeeding is a personal choice with many factors affecting a woman’s decision on how to feed their baby. As long as you and your baby are fed and happy, feed in the way that works best for you; whether that is breastfeeding, exclusively pumping, mixed feeding or offering Formula.
