What if breastfeeding hurts?

Some discomfort in the early days is common, especially as your nipples adjust to their new full-time gig. But actual pain—like toe-curling, tear-inducing pain—usually means something’s off, like a shallow latch or tongue tie.

Don’t power through pain like it’s a rite of passage. Breastfeeding isn’t supposed to feel like punishment. Ask for help early—lactation consultants are worth their weight in gold and lanolin.

And remember: you’re not less of a mom if you decide to stop or supplement. Your baby needs a healthy, not hurting, mama too.
